Safeguarding for Young Players
All players of Dark Moon aged 18 or over must play characters aged 18 or over. Sexual or sexualised activity involving people under the age of 18, or who appear to be under the age of 18, or who are played by players under the age of 18, is not a part of Dark Moon. This is to ensure a safe and secure environment for younger players.

Young Players over the age of 18
If you are 18 or over, you are an adult and can have full participation in our society. We particularly welcome students from Cambridge University. If you are a student or of a similar age and have geographical ties to Cambridge, you will be eligible for free membership of Cambridge LARP Society this year. We advise you to make appropriate use of the Personal Safety Boundary roles to restrict the kinds of roleplay other players are allowed to engage you in. The Head Ref is happy to discuss ways to handle your emotional safety when existing in social spaces with older adults, and will take a supportive stance on any issues which arise.

Young Players age 16-17
If you are under age 18 and have geographical ties to Cambridge, you will be allowed to play Dark Moon. You will be given a Personal Safety Boundary role identifying your age as <18 and banned from the Restricted Topics channels. You will also be allowed to play a character your actual age or older (rather than 18 or older). If you have no geographical ties to Cambridge, we kindly request that you find your fun elsewhere in the big wide world!

It is up to the discretion of the individual in-person linear refs whether they are comfortable having under-18s on their linear.

Young Players age 13-15
If you are under 16 and would like to play Dark Moon, the Head Ref would like to have a short chat with one of your parents or guardians to ensure they understand what you're getting into, and will take their advice on whether you should be allowed to play. The Head Ref is happy to add non-playing parents or guardians to the Discord server for the purpose of parental supervision.

Young Players age <13
You are not allowed to play Dark Moon if you are under 13 years of age, because Discord contains in its terms of service that people under age 13 should not use the platform.

What You Cannot Do
Real-world depictions of enduring, diagnosable mental illness or neurodivergence, unless portrayed by a player with that condition (diagnosed or self-diagnosed) who is drawing on their own life experiences to do so, are not a part of Dark Moon.

This is intended to represent categories from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), such as autism, bipolar disorder, anorexia, binge eating disorder, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder. It is unacceptable for any of the players in this game to further mental illness stigma by blaming the problematic actions of their characters on diagnostic categories and labels that real-world people live with.

In particular, given that we have borrowed the word "Lunatic" from its original meaning referring to people institutionalised and labelled with psychiatric disabilities that today would be given a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder, any insensitive portrayals of episodes of psychosis or mania will be treated extremely harshly. If you have the time and would like a nice read, the Organizing Guide for Psychiatric Survivors (2019) provides an authentic look into the ways our current mental health systems fail those given a psychiatric diagnosis of these kinds.

What You Can Do: Keep it Supernatural
Vampires, shifters, and changelings all have their own ways of working that make it hard for them to fit within the human world and cause problems for the humans around them. This is fine, as it is not based on real-world diagnostic labelling or symptoms. Where similarities exist, you should be sure to carefully portray your actions in a clearly supernatural manner. For example:

*Vampires do not have antisocial personality disorder, they are vampires, and are very social with their vampire friends even as they may ruthlessly manipulate their human "friends" and appear not to have empathy for them. The contrast between how you treat humans and how you treat other vampires tells an interesting story about you as a supernatural creature.

*Shifters do not have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, they are shifters, and their impulsive actions are caused by both their animalistic instincts and a swell of destiny within them that waxes and wanes with the moon. The contrast between how the instincts of your were-animal and the were-animals of other players or NPCs manifest tells an interesting story about you as a supernatural creature.

*Changelings do not have autism or Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, they are changelings, and their need for consistency and ritualised somewhat nonsensical routine is logically explained by the fact that disrespecting the rules of faerie magic can cause extreme problems. What purpose your rituals and routines serve in terms of your magical power and connection to the natural world tells an interesting story about you as a supernatural creature.

What You Can Do: Keep it Temporary and Use the Stats
Stat damage and Setbacks can represent physical and emotional difficulties of a wide variety of kinds. It is okay to react very badly to a difficult situation in a variety of interesting ways, representing your roleplay of a damaged stat or Setback, although self-harm and suicide for reasons of poor mental health is a Restricted Topic. You should ensure there is a clear and justifiable link between your actions and the damaged stat(s) or associated colour(s) of Setback.

After the point at which the stat damage or Setback is healed, you should no longer be doing that roleplay, and should try not to carry the lingering effects of it with you if such effects would indicate a diagnosable mental illness or neurodivergence as illustrated above.

If all your stats are damaged or you have all five colours of Setback and you are crossing the rainbow, your character will not survive whatever they do, and this is known in setting. Go out with a bang in the way that makes the most narrative sense to you.

What You Can Do: Use the Power-Threat-Meaning Framework
The Power-Threat-Meaning framework (2018) is an alternative to diagnostic categories for mental illness developed and endorsed by the British Psychological Society. If you want to tell an overarching story about how your character is struggling with trauma, we suggest you read up on it and then use it as a guide for your roleplay instead of reading the DSM and attempting to mimic the symptoms of a chosen diagnostic category.

In brief, the Power-Threat-Meaning framework asks six questions of you and your past:

*What has happened to you? (How is Power operating in your life?)
*How did it affect you? (What kind of Threats does this pose?)
*What sense did you make of it? (What is the Meaning of these situations and experiences to you?)
*What did you have to do to survive? (What kinds of Threat Response are you using?)
*What are your strengths? (What access to Power resources do you have?)
*What is your story? (How does all this fit together?)

The answers to these questions help you make sense of the way your symptoms fill a rational and useful, if possibly also destructive, role in your current life, and gives you the tools needed to work towards a state of better mental health.

Many of the members of Cambridge Lunatic Society are struggling with the stress of existence in a human world not designed for them, the cyclical need to take protective actions to save that world that never seem to permanently fix anything, and the slow downward spiral in their fight against the dark moon and the thinning of the veil. Applying the Power-Threat-Meaning framework to how that general state has affected and will continue to affect your specific character, in a way that makes narrative sense to you as a player, will lead to genuine and authentic roleplay of how trauma manifests and is hopefully resolved.

What You Can Do: Use Character Strengths and Virtues
If you want to tell an overarching story about how your character is struggling with trying (and failing) to be a better person, we suggest you read up on Character Strengths and Virtues (2004), a foundational text in the field of positive psychology, and then use it as a guide for your roleplay instead of reading the DSM and attempting to mimic your struggle against the symptoms of a chosen diagnostic category.

Positive psychology is about defining states of optimal mental and social health and well-being and finding ways to get people closer to them, rather than the diagnostic category approach of defining states of mental and social ill health and finding ways to get people away from them. Its general framework of what a virtue means and how to inspire yourself and others to it will be familiar to those who have played Empire LRP, though Empire's specific virtue system is not a part of or inspiration for Dark Moon. Character Strengths and Virtues defines six virtues and twenty-eight strengths within them, which are:
*Wisdom and Knowledge: creativity, curiosity, open-mindedness, love of learning, perspective, innovation
*Courage: bravery, persistence, integrity, vitality, zest
*Humanity: love, kindness, social intelligence
*Justice: citizenship, fairness, leadership
*Temperance: forgiveness and mercy, humility, prudence, self control
*Transcendence: appreciation of beauty and excellence, gratitude, hope, humor, spirituality

Some of these echo the stat array for Dark Moon, and some of them do not. Regardless, if you wish to tell a deeper story about character strengths and flaws than the stat array provides as standard, you should read up on what the words on the list above are defined to mean, pick some virtues and strengths that resonate with you as a player, and think about how they, or the lack of them, manifests in your character's thoughts and actions.

You may also wish to keep in mind that the list above refers to human virtues. You can read up on the way that Character Strengths and Virtues defines a virtue at the link above, and are encouraged to think about if there are any virtues specific to the kind of supernatural creature you are that may be particularly present or lacking within your character.

Player-Specific Boundaries / Personal Safety Boundaries
We provide a formal means to clearly indicate that there are topics you do not wish to roleplay, or to limit the emotional intensity of the roleplay other players engage you in, in the form of PSB Discord server roles clearly stating your boundary to others on the Dark Moon Discord server. Players with at least one PSB will usually show up in 🟦 blue, to prompt others to check what their boundaries are. If you would like a new PSB created for you and added to the list, ask the Head Ref to do this. Whether you have PSBs or not, if other players are pressuring you into things you have clearly indicated you do not wish to do, you are encouraged to report their behaviour to a Ref.

Emotional Safety when handling character death
Opt-in to Lethal PvP
Dark Moon is a game where you cause each other problems over the week and on Fridays, but put aside your grudges to go save Cambridge every Saturday. In order to allow players with a wide variety of views on player-versus-player conduct to participate fully in both aspects of the game, we provide opt-in Discord server roles for indicating you are okay with being on the receiving end of lethal player-versus-player actions. You can require people to ask you first, or not.

Choice of Risk Levels on In-Person Linears
Supernatural creatures are very hard to kill. Most actions that would kill a human instead cause them to receive a Setback, representing some kind of physical, equipment-related, or emotional harm. The Refs are very aware that players who enjoy dealing with serious risk of character death and players who enjoy dealing with horrible injuries are often not the same groups of players.

Death in Dark Moon is known as "crossing the rainbow", and consists of collecting a set of Setbacks in five unique colours, regardless of how many Setbacks you have in total. You can ask the linear refs to choose the colour and number of Setbacks you receive in order to independently minimise, or maximise, both the risk to your character's life and the scale of their injuries.

Emotional Safety on camera
You are not required to have your video on in order to participate in any voice channel in this game. Characters of players without video should be assumed to have mastered the art of ominous lurking in the shadowy corners in and around the UCH.

If your camera is on, you and your clothing and anything you are holding or clearly have nearby is assumed to be in-character, although the rest of your background is out-of-character and does not require set dressing etc. Many members of Cambridge Lunatic Society have sensitive ears and wear headphones.

You should not have any Restricted Topics content visible on-camera but out-of-character, or on-camera at all outside the Restricted Topics channels. This includes such things as explicitly sexual wall posters or cans of alcoholic beverages.

You should not record, or screenshot, or stream any of the Dark Moon discord voice and video channels. If you like another player's kit setup and would like an image of it, you should ask them for one. They can take their own picture with an angle and lighting and background they prefer and send it to you if they want to. Punishments for breaking this rule will be harsh.

There will always be at least one in-character interactive channel for general discussion that does not have video chat enabled. This is both to help people with bandwidth issues, and to ensure people never feel pressured to turn their video chat on in order to participate in the game. This channel will usually be the UCH Dark Room, but check the interactive map to see if that has temporarily changed for plot reasons.

Likewise, the Chill Zone out of character discussion channel does not have video chat enabled.

Visual nudity on-screen is a Restricted Topic. If you are in any doubt about whether your current visual setup falls under this, you should only have your video on in the Restricted Topics channels.

Emotional Safety in drama situations
The Escalate Role
Some of the characters in Dark Moon are not very good people. Some of the other characters in Dark Moon will probably get very upset about that.

We provide an 🔥 Escalate!!! Discord role for players who wish to very clearly indicate that they really, really, really want some drama right now. This role overrides all other colours and turns your name to 🟧 orange. Everyone else in the server is encouraged to throw escalatory drama at you unprompted, subject to the constraints of what you have clearly indicated you are not ok with.

Players are asked to turn this role off whenever they are not feeling like it, in order to preserve the sanctity of what the role conveys to others and to respect their own emotional safety.

Drama and the Tabletop Resolution System
Many of the mechanics relevant to the Friday portion of the game are designed to help the escalation, and eventual resolution and catharsis, of emotional drama. This includes the Tabletop Resolution System. However, the moral nature and grandness of scale of the plot being resolved has no impact on its narrative importance within tabletop, and a wide variety of violent and non-violent resolution methods are equally supported by the system. Baking a cake to deliver it to a wedding on time is equally as supported as murdering witnesses in order to cover up your previous murders. Bloody beat-em-ups are equally as supported as devastating duels of compliments.

Players are encouraged to generate and seek out the kind of plots, and approaches to solving them, that they wish to see more of in the system. Your choice of your two highest stats, each of which represent a character trait and corresponding problem-solving approaches, are public to other players and will help in finding the kinds of people on the server who want to have fun in similar ways to you.

Drama and Restricted Topics
Escalate!!! and Restricted Topics Access are two different roles. While we expect that people interested in one may also be interested in the other, we have purposefully created a format where the emotional stakes of any given plot can be evaluated entirely separately from the themes it contains. We hope this gives players the tools needed to have fun in the ways they wish to, without feeling obliged to opt into situations that make them uncomfortable either way around.

Further instructions on respecting the emotional safety of other players when playing with Restricted Topics can be found in the rt-rules channel of the Discord server.

In order that everyone playing Dark Moon can have an enjoyable and safe time, we have lists of Banned and Restricted Topics that are not allowed in the main areas of the game.

Banned Topics
You should not roleplay any of these topics within this game for any reason.
*Infanticide (i.e. the intentional killing of an infant - aged 12 months or less)
*Miscarriage, stillbirth, abortion and unwanted pregnancy
*Incest
*Sexual assault
*Sexual or sexualised activity involving people under the age of 18, or who appear to be under the age of 18, or who are played by players under the age of 18
*Real-world depictions of enduring, diagnosable mental illness or neurodivergence, unless portrayed by a player with that condition

Restricted Topics
*Explicit depictions of sexual activity
*Visual nudity on screen
*Very explicit depictions of violence and gore
*Self-harm and suicide for reasons of poor mental health
*Discrimination based on real-world attributes (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia etc.)
*Alcohol, cigarettes, and real-world recreational drugs.

Roleplaying and discussion of Restricted Topics should be kept to the Restricted Topics channels, which all start with the letters rt, and should not take place at any in-person event. Access to the Restricted Topics channels is opt-in via the Restricted Topics Access Discord role, which is not available to any player under the age of 18 or any player banned from the role, and may otherwise be opted in and out of at any time. By opting into this role, you take on a responsibility to yourself and your fellow Restricted Topics Access players to check in with each other and handle your emotional safety. You are allowed to ban yourself from this role.

The Anti-Rules-Lawyer Policy
Just because a topic isn't on the Banned Topics list doesn't mean it wouldn't be there if the Head Ref decided to exhaustively comb through every possible extremely upsetting topic ever and categorise them all into a horrendous document twenty pages long while having an emotional breakdown. If it seems like it should definitely be banned, and it's not on the Restricted Topics list, it's probably banned.

Here are some examples of how Tone can affect a Downtime:

:Action: My [Shifter] wants to help [Touchstone A] move house.
:Tone: Realistic
:Response: You help them move house successfully, however your superhuman strength means you end up putting a table through a window. Someone saw this and now your touchstone is being asked Inconvenient Questions by nondescript men.
:What happens in the interactive: Your Touchstone comes in and says they're being asked weird questions and trailed by suspicious men, help!

:Action: My [Shifter] wants to help [Touchstone A] move house.
:Tone: Sitcom
:Response: You help them move house and they're settled in great, however their friend saw you lift such heavy things really easily.
:What happens in the interactive: Your Touchstone comes in and admits they panicked and told their friend you used to be in the circus. It turns out they love the circus and now their friend wants to see your act.

:Action: My [Shifter] wants to help [Touchstone A] move house.
:Tone: Hit me in the feels
:Response: You help them move house, but while they're moving you come across some old photos and say their Aunt looks like a supernatural you used to know. Your Touchstone tells you their Aunt vanished years ago when they were little, please, if they're alive-! If you could find them…!
:What happens in the interactive: Your Touchstone turns up and begs anyone and everyone if they know or be able to find out what happened to their Aunt, please!

For some examples of possible downtimes:
*Vampire
:Action: Get my touchstone to steal a load of blood packs and throw a party for my vampire friends.
:Tone: Grim, give me some escalation :D

*Shifter
:Action: I want to be batman and capture some criminals.
:Tone: Fantasy/Realistic, but keep it light, I've had a rough week.

*Changeling
:Action: (Discussed with Touchstone) I cursed [Touchstone's] new car so they have to use the bus like they used to. Because of this they were so late that my Touchstone lost their job.

To illustrate the difference between escalation and restricted topics:
*Escalation, not restricted topics
:Action: Get my touchstone to steal a load of blood packs and throw a party for my vampire friends.
:Tone: Grim, give me some escalation :D
:Response: You throw a great party for your friends. One of your friends complains it took ages to get home because there was a massive car crash
:Interactive response: Your Touchstone comes in and tells you there was a massive car crash and that because there wasn't enough blood packs 5 people died. Because the stock was so unexpectedly low there is now an audit happening to see why this tragedy happened. This audit will make life difficult for *all* Vampires in the area, your touchstone is at risk of losing their job and is horrified that your party caused these deaths. They are very close to leaving and never coming back.

*Restricted topics, low/no escalation.
:Action: My Touchstone needs to protect themselves because they're Trans. I make sure they take a really good knife with them everywhere.
:Tone: Feels, but light.
:Response: Your Touchstone refuses to take the knife, so you slip it in their backpack. They will now be able to defend themselves!
:Interactive response: Your Touchstone got 'randomly' stopped and searched. When the police found the knife they were immediately apprehended roughly and unpleasantly. They are scared and hurt (not just physically) and their trust has been shaken. They want explanations, or comforting, or something, for having been put through this.

Bink: Created page with "Downtime is used to refer to time during the week between the linears and interactives. Uptime refers to both the Interactives (Fridays) and the Linears (Saturdays) and is the..."

Downtime is used to refer to time during the week between the linears and interactives. Uptime refers to both the Interactives (Fridays) and the Linears (Saturdays) and is the main focus of LARP, but other events in your characters' lives can affect and fuel what happens there.

It should be noted that Downtimes are entirely optional, you don't need to submit one to play the game and you won't receive any penalties. Don't worry - you don't need to have Touchstones and even if you don't submit a downtime there are plenty of other reasons why your Touchstones might come and ask for help!

If you think about LARP like a TV show then the Interactives and Linears are the show itself where the action and drama happens. In this example Downtimes are the premise for the next episode, the events that aren't shown on screen but have fallout that the characters need to deal with.

Almost all Downtimes will involve your Touchstones in some way as they are important people in your life, but as stated in the Touchstones section you are not very good at being human and while you are probably successful in your goal, your actions will often result in unintended consequences.

As a result of what happens in Downtime if you interacted with your Touchstones they will probably come to the UCH asking for your or others for help. If you did a downtime that doesn't involve Touchstones, you might not need a response or it might affect someone else's Touchstone. Either way, it drives some action for everyone to get involved in.
Submitting a Downtime

Downtime is designed to be simple. If you want to cause some drama for yourself or others or do something small to advance personal character goals, this is a possible way to do so.

If you want to submit a downtime request to the refs we will ask for what Tone you want your response to have. The Tone helps us work out the kind of response you get, the difference between whether you're in a sitcom with occasional serious notes or grim "How high is the body count?". This helps us to manage expectations and give everyone a response they will enjoy. Some example Tones could be: Realistic, Sitcom/Farce, Hit me in the feels, Let the bodies pile up.

As a note about restricted topics and escalation, they are completely unrelated! Escalation is talking about the stakes and the drama involved with an action, restricted topics are about the content. You can have a lighter tone even when dealing with restricted topics and the examples page includes some.

There are three ways you can organise and submit a downtime, which all happen on the Discord via your Player Communication channel (usually #YourName near the bottom):
*You can mutually agree with a Touchstone that you're going to plot your downtime together and you don't need to involve refs at all if your Touchstone is up for it. Once you're done, tell the refs about it in your Player Communication channel on the discord so that we know what's going on and make sure it fits with the setting.
*You can send a downtime request via your Player Communication channel - ideally both a short action description (50 words max?) plus a sentence about what Tone you want. This should usually be something about your relationship with a Touchstone but could be anything - more complicated things are less likely to get a satisfying response.
*If you don't know what you want and just want things to Happen to your Touchstones, tell us what Tone of drama you want via your Player Communication channel. After all, life can Just Happen to people.

If you have any questions about this process please feel free to ask the Downtime refs questions via your Player Communication channel - you can tell who they are by the roles on Discord. If you want some examples of Downtimes and how Tone affects them check out the Downtime Examples.

First, pick which variety of supernatural creature you are: Vampire, Shifterss or Changeling.

You may want to look at The Moon and see which kind of linear is primarily associated with which creature type - although you are not restricted on only going on linears associated with your type, it will be easier for you to get places on linears that do correspond to it.

Your creature type has no direct effect on your stats for live or tabletop play.

Then, think a bit about what your character is like:
* What's their name?
* What do they do when they're not hunting monsters?
* How did they become / find out they were a supernatural?
* How do they cope with the needs/demands of their creature type, e.g. feeding or dealing with their urges?
* Do they have a job? Where / how do they live?
* This might be a good time to put together a few ideas for Touchstones you might want to recruit
**Although don't get too attached to details because you'll need to talk this through with whoever is volunteering to play them!
* How did they find out about / get involved with CLS?
** Did they seek out other supernaturals (either to fight with or for safety), get into trouble and need to be rescued, or just get unexpectedly bundled into the UCH Panic Room one evening to keep them safe from the Dark Moon?

If you're planning to come to any of the online events it's a good idea to think about a starting set of Tabletop stats - it's a very simple system, and you can change your mind if you don't get on with your first pick.

Similarly, if you're planning to come to a live linear, take a look at the LARP rules and pick out a class, skill and background - if you're unsure of what might work well for you, come to the Discord server and ask the friendly stats nerds in #ask-the-playerbase - or the refs in #ask-a-ref.

When you were younger, you wandered off into the wild places and caught the attention of the fae. They stole you from your home and kept you for many years. You got out somehow, but you are having some trouble reintegrating into the human world. Too much use of your faerie powers causes you to fall into the sway of faerie morality, and it is only through the careful studying of your favourite humans that you are brought back to yourself. You want to stop other humans being consigned to your terrible fate.

* You are aligned to the falling moon. When the moon is in the phase you are aligned to, you feel stronger and more influenced by the supernatural. You may wish to temporarily tone up your physrep of your supernatural features, or temporarily tone up your roleplay effects.
* Vampires, shifters, and changelings are all immortal if they take care of themselves. The most common cause of 'death' is Crossing the Rainbow - losing your grip on reality and plunging into the abyss between worlds. As such, you can play a character from age 18 up to any age you wish, but this will have no mechanical effect on you. It may affect your fashion choices. Modern clothing is on-brief but so is any kind of historical fashion.
* Physreps for changelings include pointed ears, geometric face paint designs, and plantlife. They can also look human enough that most people don’t notice, and there are no minimum physrep requirements.

One of your parents was a shifter, or the gift arose in you spontaneously. Destiny calls you to take spectacular actions to protect this world and the people you love so much within it. Your inability to solve problems like a true human often does cause you issues with that, though. Nobody appreciates anywhere near enough all the work you put in! It’s unfair!

The term “werehuman” is derogatory, as it sort of implies you are mostly an animal and therefore a slave to your instincts. E.g. “Did you hear a shifter group are plotting to blow up the Corpus Clock because they don’t like grasshoppers? Ugh, they’re such werehumans.” Species-specific terms like werewolf, werecat, werebadger and werespider are non-derogatory and in regular use.

* You are aligned to the full moon.
* Physreps for shifters include patches of fur, claws, spikes, scales, feathers, and animalistic character traits. One animal only, but it can be any non-extinct animal. They can also look human enough that most people don’t notice, and there are no minimum physrep requirements.

You were human once, in some other time. Then you got bitten, and now you’re an unaging monster who feeds on the emotional or physical lifeblood of the living. You’ve done pretty well for yourself in establishing a nice cushy unlife, and you like to think you are justifying your terrible actions to the humans that enable that by the work you put on in service of the greater good to keep the common dead from rising to threaten your spot.

What is a Touchstone?
Your character maintains links with the human world through a small group of humans they care about and who vaguely know they are a supernatural creature. Mechanically, and also IC, these are called your Touchstones.

Player characters are often not very helpful to their Touchstones, whether or not they intend to be, because they are not particularly good at being a modern-day human. Most Downtime actions consist of messing up your Touchstones’ lives. Your Touchstones will turn up at the UCH on Friday nights and demand you or other people from CLS fix the problems you caused. They may also throw drama at you directly depending on what exactly it was that you did.

Cambridge Lunatic Society and its human “friends” is a small fishbowl, and many of your Touchstones are shared between two or even three supernaturals. Even worse than this, different kinds of supernatural creatures tend to care about humans differently, and you’re not very good at sharing. Even if you’re not intending to be bad people individually, your conflicting actions cause a lot of stress and problems for the humans you collectively care about.

If you're not sure what kind of relationships to create, here are some guidelines:
* Vampires are likely to have as their Touchstones the humans that they feed upon or use to source their food or wealth. They want to exploit these people to sustain their power, but have to care at least a little bit about their basic well-being - after all, you can’t feed on the dead.
* Shifters are likely to have as their Touchstones those humans they feel called by destiny to protect. They want to solve all these people’s problems though their primal methods of doing so are often ones that make complex human issues worse, and they may become very angry if they feel they are not given the kind of respect and awe they feel they deserve for all the tireless work they put in.
* Changelings are likely to have as their Touchstones those humans that remind them what it means to be human. They are interested in maintaining these people as a shining example of human-ness, in all its glory and faults, and are very opposed to change and especially supernatural ‘contamination’ of their Touchstones’ lives by other people, often going to extreme lengths to put things back where they think they should be.

Playing a Touchstone
Touchstones will be available as DPC (directed player character) roles. To recruit a Touchstone for your character, you can either pick one up in character as they come into the UCH, or you can post in the #touchstone-recruitment channel to see if anyone's interested in picking up a new one.

If you are playing the Friday game and are an experienced larper who is not new to Cambridge LARP Society, you are expected to play at least one Touchstone as your monstering duties. To start playing a Touchstone, look at #touchstone-recruitment on the Discord server and see if anything looks interesting - or just turn up as a human to the meeting in the UCH channels, thinking that Cambridge Lunatic Society sounds like great fun, and forge Touchstone relationships in-character.

Once you're attached, you will receive the Downtime actions of your attached player characters, and will have the chance to discuss briefly with them or the refs what problems this has caused for you and what other people from CLS could do to fix them. (You can also just talk directly to some or all of your player characters to arrange what has happened if you both prefer that option.)

You will then turn up as the Touchstone in the UCH channels, maybe cause drama, recruit two or three other player characters to come fix your issues, and there will be a short resolution played out in tabletop. We encourage you to GM this resolution yourself using our GM-friendly system, but other GMs will be available if you don’t want to, and you can just sit on the channel and provide plot details.

The player characters you befriend and pick out to solve your plot may decide (with your consent as a player) to acquire you as one of their Touchstones, allowing them to cause problems for you in Downtime as well, and the cycle of drama continues.

Touchstones are not intended to be long-term characters. The role is escalatory in nature, and we expect the average duration of a higher-drama Touchstone role to be two to five weeks. Possible retirement scenarios include:
*Dying as a result of your supernaturals’ actions.
*Realising that this relationship is not good for you, blocking them on everything, and moving away from Cambridge never to return.
*Your supernaturals suddenly losing interest in you in favour of more interesting and valuable humans.
*Being bitten by a vampire, spontaneously manifesting shifter powers, or being stolen by and rescued from the fae, and joining the system as a player character.

Touchstone plot is allowed to contain restricted topics, as long as it is kept to the appropriate restricted topics channels, which all start with the letters rt and are opt-in. Guidance on how to run plot containing restricted topics in ways that respect the emotional safety of your fellow players can be found in the rt-rules channel of the Discord server.

You are a community of supernatural creatures, affiliated with the Cambridge Lunatic Society, who have agreed with each other to go out and fix them.

The current moon phase will be the icon for the Discord server. Remember: holding a stick up against the half-moon, “b” for birth is rising and “d” for death is falling.

After game start, the moon will start slipping between phases unpredictably each week. This is extremely worrying and possibly a sign of the end times. The rising moon, full moon, falling moon, and dark moon each cause their own problems, and the Cambridge Lunatic Society knows the general gist pretty well by now:
Rising Moon

Rising Moon
At the rising moon, the dead sometimes climb out of the ground and must be put back to rest before the human world notices. This can be done temporarily via violence, but to fix it more permanently CLS talks to them and sorts out the unfinished business anchoring them to this world.

The rising moon is associated with Vampires - IC, Vampire characters will be expected to take the lead on putting together a linear party for this type of linear. Rising moon linears will be medium combat with feelings and mystery plot.

It will be possible to opt for a lower-combat or non-combat option on rising moon in-person linears by carrying bells. The risen dead are scared of bells. If you are ringing one bell in one hand, they will not attack you unprovoked, although they will retaliate. If you are ringing two bells in two hands, they will flee from you, and you can use this to herd them around to help other party members.

Full Moon
The full moon calls shifters to their destiny. For some groups of shifters, this is carrying out grand plans that would lead to huge issues if not stopped. CLS monitors suspicious activity, and goes out to thwart the plans of any shifter groups looking to threaten valuable things about Cambridge.

The full moon is associated with Shifters - IC, Shifter characters will be expected to take the lead on putting together a linear party for this type of linear. Full Moon linears will be medium combat with grandstanding and heist plot.

Falling Moon
When the moon wanes, portals to the fae world open, and the faeries like to steal humans away through them. At the falling moon, CLS looks through the missing persons’ reports, and organises an expedition through a portal to the fae world to barter for their safe return.

The falling moon is associated with Changelings - IC, Changeling characters will be expected to take the lead on putting together a linear party for this type of linear. Falling moon linears will be lower combat, with puzzles and performance and fae negotiation and trickery. However, it is possible to put your own soul on the line as a negotiating chip, and they can be very very risky if you do that.

Dark Moon
Most people at Cambridge Lunatic Society hate the dark moon. At the dark moon, the infinite maw of darkness between worlds seeps through the cracks in the veil into monstrous forms members of CLS call moonshadows. This actually happens at all other quarter-moon phases as well, but at the dark moon it gets really really bad. Also it’s been getting worse lately and nobody knows why.

CLS sends a crack team of “volunteers” on an expedition all around town to destroy the moonshadows before they coalesce into bigger moonshadows that can cause serious emotional harm to the human residents of Cambridge and physical danger to the supernaturals. Everyone not on the expedition gets locked into a well-warded but too small panic room for safety and complains a lot about the smell, which does help in sourcing the “volunteers”.

Luckily, non-supernaturals can’t see moonshadows or magic, so all the humans see is the Cambridge Lunatic Society dressing up in a bizarre array of costumes and what surely must be prosthetic makeup, running around in the night, swinging weapons around and yelling at thin air. The fact that this happens every new moon is one of those charming quirks about Cambridge that has been going on for so long that nobody questions it or knows how it started. Humans who think it looks like great fun and want to join in sometimes turn up at CLS meetings and end up as someone’s Touchstone. They probably regret that.

Dark moon in-person linears will be combat, combat, and more combat. There will be very few or no non-combat encounters, and there will be a system of communicating monster stats to players via coloured sashes to ensure fights are challenging but fair. Don your finest murder robes and have at it. Dark moon tabletop linears will have no safe place to rest and recover stat damage, which means they have the potential to be much more deadly than any other tabletop linear.

Every quarter-moon (which in this setting always exactly lines up with Saturday), the veils between worlds get thin, and major problems happen.

Rising Moon

Rising Moon
The rising moon is associated with Vampires - IC, Vampire characters will be expected to take the lead on putting together a linear party for this type of linear.

At the rising moon, the dead sometimes climb out of the ground and must be put back to rest before the human world notices.

This can be done temporarily via violence, but to fix it more permanently CLS talks to them and sorts out the unfinished business anchoring them to this world.

Full Moon
The full moon is associated with Shifters - IC, Shifter characters will be expected to take the lead on putting together a linear party for this type of linear.

The full moon calls shifters to their destiny. For some groups of shifters, this is carrying out grand plans that would lead to huge issues if not stopped. CLS monitors suspicious activity, and goes out to thwart the plans of any shifter groups looking to threaten valuable things about Cambridge.

Full Moon linears will be medium combat with grandstanding and heist plot.

Falling Moon
The falling moon is associated with Changelings - IC, Changeling characters will be expected to take the lead on putting together a linear party for this type of linear.

When the moon wanes, portals to the fae world open, and the faeries like to steal humans away through them. At the falling moon, CLS looks through the missing persons’ reports, and organises an expedition through a portal to the fae world to barter for their safe return.

Falling moon linears will be lower combat, with puzzles and performance and fae negotiation and trickery. However, it is possible to put your own soul on the line as a negotiating chip, and they can be very very risky if you do that.

First, pick which variety of supernatural creature you are: Vampire, Shifter or Changeling.

* What's their name?
